ABOUT THE BOOK

Grandpa’s gone missing and things have disappeared from around the house (including the cat’s kittens). Grandma suspects the pig is involved in the mischief so Emily is sent for to solve the mystery. The adventure begins and ends with the garden maze though a visual clue at the very end of the book hints that the adventure may not be completely over.

On one hand Pig in the Middle is merely a bizarre and fantastical romp full of visual jokes and understated humour and on another it alludes to the complex and very real situation of age-related memory loss.

The pig in the story is based on a real pig called Portia. While the real Portia did not pilfer toasters or scarves or host garden maze parties, she did have a strong crush on a Dorset ram and was known for being a bit of a Houdini. The blonde dog in the story is also based on a real dog who, like the dog in the story, has perfected the art of looking worried.

Sally Fitz-Gibbon is the author of Two Shoes, Blue Shoes, New Shoes; The Patchwork House; Uncle John’s Farm and Lizzie’s Storm. She is also my mother.

The illustrations are rendered in ink and watercolour on Arches 140lb cold press paper
